NHTSA Targets 38 Million Vehicles in Takata Airbag Probe

Nearly 38 million vehicles in the U.S. could be equipped with Takata Corp. airbag inflators that might explode when triggered, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The materials indicate the agency is investigating Takata's so-called Beta series inflators. About 25 million of the devices were installed in passenger-side airbag systems sold in the U.S. between 2000 and 2004. Another 12.8 million inflators are part of the driver-side airbags in 2004-2007 models.
