The U.S. has upgraded its investigation into fuel leaks in Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans to an engineering analysis, often a precursor to a recall.
The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involves 2003-2008 models, a pool that includes about 250,000 vehicles in the U.S.
NHTSA says it is aware of more than 500 customer complaints about strong gasoline odor inside and outside affected vehicles, especially after refueling. The agency began its investigation at the beginning of 2012, focusing on the high-performance E55 AMG. That probe was later expanded to cover other E-Class models.
