The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into a report that the side-curtain airbag inflator made by Takata Corp. misfired in a 2015 model Volkswagen Tiguan crossover vehicle.
The incident occurred in Missouri two months ago when the driver, who reported no injuries, struck a deer.
VW so far has not been involved in an 11-company global recall of some 34 million airbags with Takata inflators that could explode when triggered in a crash. None of the Takata recalls to date has involved a side-curtain airbag system, and none has involved a 2015 model.
But NHTSA is ordering VW and Takata to provide details about any other such incidents. The agency also wants a tally of how many VW vehicles may be equipped with airbags inflators that use ammonium nitrate, the chemical implicated in the Takata recalls.
