NHTSA Probes Antilock Brake Flaw in Ford Midsize Sedans

The U.S. has opened a preliminary investigation into antilock brake systems that could malfunction in 2009-2011 model Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize sedans.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has tallied three crashes and more than 140 complaints related to the issue. The agency suspects The ABS’s hydraulic control unit fails to maintain sufficient braking pressure.
Rough or slippery surfaces can cause a vehicle’s antilock brakes to pulse rapidly to maximize available traction. But NHTSA says affected Fusion and Milan owners report their brake pedals feel spongy or plunge to the floor under those conditions, thereby lengthening stopping distance.
