The U.S. is investigating whether General Motors Co. should broaden a previous recall to fix power steering failures in its compact pickup trucks.
GM recalled 2015 model Chevrolet Colorado (pictured) and GMC Canyon pickups in 2016 to repair faulty wiring connectors in their electric power steering systems. The flaw causes the power steering to quit unexpectedly, thereby making the vehicle suddenly more difficult to steer.
The initial recall covered only 3,000 trucks produced over a 12-week period. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has since received 50 complaints about similar problems with 2016 model Colorado and Canyon trucks built outside the scope of the original callback.
NHTSA says an expanded recall could expand the initial recall by 115,000 pickups.
