An unknown number of counterfeit driver's airbags have been installed in U.S. cars within the past three years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In a crash, the replacement devices may fail to inflate or could explode and hurl shrapnel into the passenger compartment, according to the agency.
NHTSA says its warning involves only airbags that were purchased online or were installed after a crash by repair shops that are not part of new-car dealerships. The agency advises consumers who may be affected to have their vehicles inspected and the airbag, if defective, replaced at their own expense.
