The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will continue monitoring the safety recall process at General Motors Co. for a third and final year.
The oversight is part of the consent order GM signed in 2014 to settle regulatory claims related to the company’s belated recall of 2.6 million vehicles equipped with faulty ignition switches that could suddenly turn off the engine. The agreement gave NHTSA the option of monitoring GM’s recall procedures for as many as three years.
GM tells Automotive News it has found NHTSA’s oversight "productive" and welcomes another year of federal monitoring.
