Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans to shift the Dodge Charger sports sedan from its current LX platform to a chassis shared with the Alfa Romeo Giulia when the next-generation model is launched early next decade.
The Charger will get one more facelift for the 2019 model year before switching to the Alfa architecture, an industry source tells Automotive News. Chrysler relaunched the Charger nameplate in 2005 after a 19-year hiatus with the current sixth-generation model, which was last updated for the 2015 model year.
In addition to the new platform, the seventh-generation Charger is expected to be about 500 lbs lighter than the current car. Overall length is expected to remain at about 198 inches, AN says. The newspaper says the all-new Charger also will get FCA’s new twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine scheduled to bow in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler.
