The Renault-Nissan Alliance says next-generation versions of the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf electric sedans will ride on the same platform when they debut in about 2020.

Arnauld Deboeuf, who heads the partnership’s strategic management team, tells reporters the two cars will share a common powertrain but may continue to employ different battery systems. Nissan builds its own cells to make batteries, but Renault buys cells from LG Chem. Deboeuf says Nissan is analyzing whether to buy or build cells in the future.

It isn’t clear how the alliance will reconcile the sizes of the new models. The current Zoe is a subcompact and the Leaf is a compact. Deboeuf also offered no details about the launch schedule for either redesigned model.

Nissan introduced the Leaf in 2010, and Renault launched the Zoe two years later. Both models upgraded their batteries earlier this year to enhance range.
