Confirming previous reports, Audi AG says it will launch a new “traffic-jam” self-driving system with the 2018 model A8 sedan.
Due sometime next year, the fourth-generation A8 will use an array of laser, radar and ultrasonic sensors as well as multiple video cameras to survey a vehicle’s surrounding environment. The system will allow the vehicle to steer, accelerate and brake itself at speeds as high as 37 mph.
Audi aims for continuing improvement to the technology that will lead to a fully autonomous vehicle by 2025.
The all-new A8 will be the first Audi model designed from the ground up under the direction of Marc Lichte since he succeeded Wolfgang Egger as the luxury brand’s chief designer two years ago. Styling cues are expected to reflect those of the 2015 Prologue concept car, which also was developed under Lichte.
Riding on Audi’s lightweight modular longitude matrix platform, the new car will be 440 lbs lighter than the current A8, according to the carmaker. Powertrain choices will include upgraded V-6 and V-8 engines, plus a 600-hp W-12 mill that is being launched in the Bentley Bentayga crossover vehicle.
A plug-in hybrid variant of the A8 also is being developed. It will be part of Audi’s announced plan to launch at least one new electrified vehicle every year, starting in 2018 with an all-electric crossover vehicle.
