New Toyota Car Hauler Runs on CNG

Toyota Motor Corp.’s Toyota Transport unit in Long Beach, Calif., has begun operating what it says is the first car hauler in the U.S. that runs on compressed natural gas fuel.
The tractor-trailer combo emits 85% less particulate matter and 10% less carbon dioxide than comparable diesel-powered vehicles, according to the carmaker.
Toyota designed the vehicle, which can carry nine cars, with truck maker Peterbilt, trailer supplier Cottrell Inc. and Agility Fuel Systems. The CNG system was added without any sacrifice to the cab or trailer’s cargo capacity, according to the partners.
They expect the CNG truck to log an average of 7,000 to 8,000 miles per month and will evaluate its efficiency and performance versus diesel car carriers.
