New Towing System Lets Everyone Back Up Like a Pro

Ford Motor Co. has developed a new feature to help drivers better steer towed trailers and boats during backup maneuvers. The option, which hasn't been priced yet, will be available on all 2016 F-150 fullsize pickup trucks later this year.
Dubbed Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the system lets drivers steer with a dash-mounted knob turning it in the same direction they want the trailer to go while traveling in reverse. Ford says this is easier and more precise than using the steering wheel, which has to be turned in the opposite direction of the intended path of the trailer, something many inexperienced towers often have trouble doing.
Drivers can use a vehicle's traditional rearview mirrors or a backup camera to navigate the process. Accelerator and brake pedals are operated normally, but vehicle speed is automatically limited over certain road surfaces to maintain control.
Ford developed the system, which it describes as a segment-first, over the last 10 years leveraging advanced camera and other safety-related technologies. It has received five patents for the technology, and another 10 are pending.
