Carroll Shelby International Inc.'s Shelby American unit says its latest Ford Mustang-based Super Snake model can generate as much as 750 hp. Shelby designed the ultra-muscle car, which is based on Ford's all-new 2015 Mustang G, with the help of Ford Motor Co.'s Ford Performance arm.
The new Super Snake is modified to enhance handling and performance characteristics. The car begins as a Mustang GT buyers provide the base model, which Shelby modifies with a 5.0-liter V-8 and Ford Performance supercharger that makes 650 hp. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and, for the first time in a Shelby Super Snake, an optional 6-speed automatic.
Shelby adds Ford Performance suspension components, half shafts, 3.73 gears and an upgraded handling package. The Super Snake also gets Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires on 20-inch Weld Racing wheels, 6-piston Wilwood brakes and a throaty Borla exhaust.
Exterior changes include a carbon fiber hood, forced-air scoop, blacked-out grille, racing stripes and an aero kit with a large rear spoiler. Super Snake badging abounds inside and out.
Options include a more powerful Kenne Bell or Whipple supercharger and an improved intercooler and heat exchanger system. The souped up version can produce more than 750 hp, according to Shelby.
Modifications to produce the base Super Snake will cost buyers $50,000 not including the original cost of the Mustang GT, which starts at about $36,000. The price of the 750-hp upgrade and other options haven't been announced yet.
Shelby plans to limit production of the 2015 Super Snake to 300 models. The vehicles will be built at the company's facility in Las Vegas.
