Toyota Motor Corp.'s Scion division aims to strengthen its position in the low-cost subcompact market with two new models: the iM hatchback and 1A sedan.
The 2016 models are built on completely different platforms, allowing for considerable differentiation. The Scion iM rides on Toyota's MC platform, which carries the Europe-market Toyota Auris. The 1A sedan was developed jointly with Mazda Motor Corp.
The iM's 102-inch wheelbase makes the car slightly larger and heavier and able to carry more cargo than the notchback 1A. The hatchback's distinctive front-end styling also sets it apart, with a slanted grille treatment that contrasts with the 1A's relatively flat front and large trapezoid grille.
The iM is powered by a 1.8-liter, 16-valve 4-cylinder engine that makes 137 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. The U.S. version comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission that emulates a geared automatic with seven shift points. The hatchback has an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 37 mpg.
Built at a joint venture plant with Mazda in Mexico, the 1A is fitted with a 1.5-liter version of Mazda's SkyActiv engine. The powerplant combines a long stroke and high compression to enhance mid-range torque and fuel economy, while controlling pre-ignition with long exhaust runners and direct injection.
The engine produces 105 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with Mazda's 6-speed automatic transmission to provide a 42-mpg highway rating.
As with the new hatchback, the 1A gets electric power steering. But the sedan's rear axle is a torsion beam, rather than the double wishbone on the iM.
Both cars use a healthy dose of high-strength steel to reduce weight and increase chassis rigidity. They also feature relatively upscale interiors for their segment and a long-list of standard equipment. The transmission is the only option on either model.
The iA sedan starts at $15,700 and the iM carries an $18,500 sticker. Add about $1,000 for the automatic transmission versions of each.
