Hyundai Motor Co. says its new 1.6-liter "Gamma" engine and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission will give the South Korean carmaker's 2015 Sonata midsize sedan a U.S. city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of about 28/38/32 mpg.
Those figures compare with 24/35/28 mpg for a 2014 Sonata equipped with the current 2.4-liter Theta II four-banger and 6-speed automatic transmission.
The new engine makes about 177 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque compared with 190 hp and 179 lb-ft for the Theta II powerplant. Hyundai says the Sonata will be the first in its segment to offer a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The Gamma engine will debut in the Sonata Eco model, which starts at $24,100. The car will be assembled at Hyundai's factory in Montgomery, Ala., beginning later this summer. The Alabama facility makes the smaller Elantra sedan in addition to the Sonata.
