Porsche AG unveiled a new twin-turbocharged V-8 engine at the recent Vienna Motor Symposium.

The powerplant will replace Porsche’s current twin-turbo 4.8-liter V-8. Unlike that mill, which is exclusive to Porsche, the new V-8 is expected to be shared with VW Group’s Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini marques after debuting in the next-generation Panamera Turbo later this year.

Porsche hasn’t revealed the new engine’s displacement. But media reports suggest it will be a 4.0-liter system loosely based on Audi’s 3.0-liter V-6 architecture that launched in the new S4. It also will feature automatic stop-start technology and a cylinder deactivation system that can boost fuel efficiency by as much as 30% when operating between 950 and 3500 rpm, according to a Car and Driver.

In the Panamera Turbo, the engine is expected to kick out about 550 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, while redlining at 6,800 rpm. This would put it close to the 4.8-liter V-8’s top rating of 570 hp and 590 lb-ft.

Transmission choices will include an 8-speed automatic and a dual-clutch 8-speed ZF system. The engine also is said to be compatible with hybrid-electric drivetrains.
