Union Pacific Railroad has opened a $400 million, 2,200-acre railroad hub in Santa Teresa, N.M., that will handle intermodal freight between Mexico and the U.S.
Called the Santa Teresa Intermodal Ramp, the hub is designed to handle freight containers that can be moved by truck, rail or ship. The complex began processing truck traffic in April.
The rail facility has capacity to handle 225,000 containers annually and is expected to process 150,000 units in its first year. The center includes a fueling station, crew change buildings and loading facilities.
Union Pacific says the hub, located near the Santa Teresa Airport, will enhance the efficiency of its 760-mile rail line between El Paso, Texas, and Los Angeles.
