Plans to expand Daimler AG’s lineup of high-performance Mercedes-AMG models could include a mid-engine supercar, Top Gear reports. Noting that there’s always a “credible business case” for limited-edition hypercars, AMG boss Tobias Moers tells the British enthusiast publication there’s room for such a model above the current GT S in AMG’s lineup.
If approved, the vehicle would replace the 563-hp SLS AMG, which was discontinued at the end of 2014. Previous reports speculated that Mercedes was developing a new supercar that would be powered by a 12-cylinder engine.
Moers acknowledges there would be engineering challenges related to a mid-engine design: to date all AMG production cars have had a front-engine layout. But he says the recent success of the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team with mid-engine race cars could be transferred to production models.
