BMW AG has unveiled the production version of its high-performance M4 GTS coupe, which was previewed in concept form at California's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this summer.

The limited-edition M4 GTS sports a variety of performance upgrades over the already potent M4 coupe. This includes what's said to be the first application of a water injection system in a production vehicle. The system sprays water vapor into the intake manifold, which significantly lowers engine temperatures and reduces engine knock, thus hiking efficiency and power.

The system boosts output from the M4's 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 engine 16% to 493 hp. Torque is up 10% to 442 lb-ft. BMW says the M4 GTS can race from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and zoom around Germany's famed 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife course in 7 minutes and 28 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 190 mph.

The engine is mated with a 7-speed double-clutch transmission. Other performance features include carbon ceramic disc brakes, a manually adjustable sport-tuned coilover suspension and what BMW boasts is the first production application of organic light-emitting-diode taillights.

A special aero kit includes a new hood, adjustable front splitter and a carbon fiber rear wing with CNC-machined aluminum mounts that are connected to a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic trunk lid. Carbon fiber also is used in the roof and instrument panel support.

Further weight savings result from eliminating the rear seats. The M4 GTS is 256 lbs lighter than the base M4.

BMW plans to produce 700 of the M4 GTS, with 300 of those earmarked for the U.S. Pricing hasn't been released.
