Volkswagen AG’s Lamborghini unit is adding the rear-wheel-drive Huracan LP 580-2 coupe to its 2016 lineup. The supercar brand, which has focused almost exclusively on all-wheel-drive models in recent years, revealed the new Huracan this week at the Los Angeles auto show.

Describing the LP 580-2 as the “purest expression” of a Lamborghini ever, CEO Stephan Winkelmann tells reporters that several other rwd Huracan variants are planned.

The LP 580-2 gets the same 5.2-liter V-10 naturally aspirated engine used in all-wheel-drive Huracans. But power has been detuned slightly to 571 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque from 602 hp and 413 lb-ft. Three-fourths of the peak torque in the new model is available at 1,000 rpm.

The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission also is maintained. Winkelmann ruled out a manual option, noting technical constraints and lack of demand for such a gearbox from Lamborghini customers.

Eliminating the awd hardware saves more than 70 lbs, dropping the LP 580-2’s curb weight to 3,062 lbs with a 60:40 rear bias. This allows the detuned V-8 to propel the car from zero to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds—just 0.2 seconds slower than the awd Huracan LP 610-4 coupe. Top speed is down slightly to 199 mph.

The new model’s suspension, steering and stability control have been recalibrated for the rwd setup. The car’s three driving modes include oversteer characteristics that let experienced drivers fully utilize the rear-drive setup.

Visual changes include a new front fascia and revised air intakes that increase down pressure on the front axle. The LP 580-2 also gets a new rear spoiler lip, 19-inch wheels and unique Pirelli PZero tires.

In the U.S., the Huracan LP 580-2 will start at just over $201,000 including a gas guzzler tax. That’s about $39,000 less than the awd LP 610-4 coupe.

The supercar is being launched now in Europe and will bow in the U.S. early next year.
