Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will unveil its new Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan this week in Italy, Automotive News reports.

Citing unnamed supplier sources, AN says the new model will be launched in Europe early next year and in North America later next spring. But other sources tell the publication that the program, which already has been delayed several times over the last few years, likely will be pushed back a few more months to resolve lingering NVH issues.

The Giulia is the first of eight new Alfa Romeo models due over the next three years. It will be followed by a midsize SUV late next year, a flagship sedan in 2017, then two SUVs, a second midsize model (possibly a coupe), a two-seater or other specialty vehicle and two compacts, according to AN.

With the new vehicles, Alfa will compete head-to-head with Audi and BMW in the premium luxury market. The FCA brand aims to increase its annual sales from 70,000 units in 2014 to 400,000 including 150,000 per year in North America.

The first three Alfas will ride on a new rear-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive platform developed by team of engineers led by former Ferrari engineer Philippe Krief, AN says.

Alfa's midsize sedan will compete against the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series car. The new midsize SUV will target the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, and the upcoming fullsize sedan will line up opposite the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series.

Powertrain choices for the vehicles will include new gasoline and diesel V-6 engines. The direct-injection 3.0-liter gasoline unit will feature twin turbochargers and make as much as 510 hp, suppliers tell AN.
