Previous spy shots indicate an evolutionary design change from the current model, which was launched in 2008.
The sixth-generation 7 Series will retain the basic size and shape of the current model. In addition to standard and long-wheelbase versions, an extra-long-wheelbase model also is expected.
The lightweight modular design will save as much as 290 lbs, according to media reports. The rear-drive architecture uses a combination of aluminum, high-strength steel, magnesium and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. All-wheel drive will be optional.
Other goodies include road-scanning technology with stereo cameras, LED headlights, and remote-controlled parking and semi-autonomous driving capabilities. In addition, the car's infotainment system will include gesture recognition software to control functions.
Engine choices will include a range of 4-, 6- and 12-cylinder gasoline and diesel units. A new 3.0-liter inline-six powerplant will be available with either two or three turbochargers. A 9-speed automatic transmission is standard. BMW is said to be evaluating an M performance version for the new 7 Series that would be powered by a 600-hp V-8. A plug-in hybrid derivative also is in the works.
