Trade envoys from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. plan to resume negotiations in 10 days after failing to reach agreement on updates to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The pause comes after four days of intensive talks in Washington, D.C., over such major issues as local content requirements and revised procedures for handling trade disputes. Negotiators report significant progress and say they are optimistic about reaching an agreement.
Trade ministers are trying to complete NAFTA’s first significant update since it began in 1994 ahead of Mexico’s presidential election in July and the beginning of U.S. midterm Congressional election campaigning this summer.
