Safety advocate Ralph Nader suggests General Motors Co. set up an independent ombudsman office to accept confidential assertions by GM employees about unresolved product safety problems.
Nader envisions an office functioning outside GM's chain of command and reporting directly to the CEO. The scheme would make the CEO responsible for deciding whether such reports warrant action.
He also says GM could offer monetary rewards to employees whose suggestions avert death and injuries to customers.
