Mustang Driver Injured by Metal Fragment from Airbag

Investigators are looking into a report that the driver of a 2007 Mustang was injured in the leg earlier this year by a metal fragment ejected by the car's airbag.

In June Ford Motor Co. recalled of 85,000 cars, including 2007 model Mustangs, to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode. But the campaign, which was specified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is limited to high-humidity states that don't include North Carolina where the crash occurred.

NHTSA and Takata say the faulty inflators are especially susceptible to moisture. Ford claims its data indicate the Takata inflator design used in its vehicles hasn't shown the same risk of disintegration as Takata designs employed by other carmakers.
