Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk topped last night’s boisterously enthusiastic unveiling of the company’s Semi Class 8 electric highway truck by showing a prototype of the next-generation Tesla Roadster.
Musk claims the two-seater will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, reach 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, cover the quarter-mile in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of about 250 mph. Such statistics will make the Roadster the world’s fastest production car, Musk boasts.
The Roadster will come with a 200-kWh battery, giving the car a range of 600 miles (1,000 km) per charge. Tesla is offering the first 1,000 cars as Founders Series models at $250,000 each.
Customers can reserve a standard Roadster, expected to cost $200,000, with a $45,000 deposit. The company plans to begin building the sports car in 2020.
