Matthias Mueller, who resigned as CEO of Volkswagen AG two weeks ago, also has relinquished his seat on the board of VW’s controlling owner, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, effective today.
Porsche SE says it will decide later on Mueller’s successor. He became VW Group CEO and management board chairman in September 2015. He succeeded CEO Martin Winterkorn, who resigned over the VW diesel emission cheating scandal.
Mueller launched a broad overhaul of VW’s notoriously rigid and bureaucratic structure. One goal was to avoid another regulatory scandal. A broader objective was to streamline operations and help VW cope with the challenges of new regulations, an industry-wide shift from diesel to electrified powertrains and the emergence of autonomous driving and connectivity technologies.
But critics say Mueller hasn’t moved fast enough to transform VW’s authoritarian culture, resolve continuing investigations into the diesel scandal, streamline product development and cut manufacturing costs.
