Output of Maserati Levante SUV/crossover vehicles has been trimmed again, this time with 59% shorter work weeks through July, according to Italy’s FIOM labor union.
Last year Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV cut production for more than three weeks in October-November, then extended the usual holiday shutdown by one week at year-end.
At the time, LMC Automotive predicted that output of the SUV would plunge 44% to 5,200 units in the fourth quarter of 2017. Demand for the $75,000 vehicle started strong when the Levante was introduced in 2016 but faded midway through last year.
FCA originally planned to produce the Levante, first unveiled in concept form as the Kubang in 2011, in the U.S. Production moved to Italy after the carmaker scrapped plans for the Maserati model to share a chassis with the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.
