Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is issuing two recalls in the U.S. to fix electrical problems that could cause the exterior lights, windshield wipers and/or defroster blower motor to fail.
Both campaigns cover MMC's Outlander crossovers and Lancer sedans and hatchbacks. Some models are involved in both recalls.
The larger callback will replace heater blower motors in 77,000 of the company's 2009-2011 Outlander crossovers and Lancer sedans and hatchbacks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that a motor failure would pose a safety risk by markedly degrading the ability of the heater to defrost or defog the windshield.
The second recall will replace the electronic controller for the headlamps, tail lamps and windshield wipers in 53,400 of its 2009-2010 Outlander crossovers and 2009-2010 Lancer sedans and hatchbacks. NHTSA says the defective computers can develop unstable voltage, resulting in intermittent failure of the headlamps, tail lamps and/or windshield wipers.
