Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is preparing to recall 82,400 cars and SUVs in the U.S. to cure a transmission software fault that could interfere with vehicle acceleration. The vehicles also will be inspected for loose hose clamps that could cause a fire or make the transmission stop working entirely.
The callback covers 2015-2016 model Outlander Sport SUVs and 2016 model Outlanders and Lancer sedans. The affected vehicles are equipped with a continuously variable transmission supplied by Japan’s Jatco Ltd.
MMC says the transmissions may hesitate after accelerating from a stop or upon accelerating after constant speed operation. The company blames the stumbling on a momentary loss of signal to the transmission’s electronic controller. Dealers will reprogram the control unit.
