Michelin & Cie is developing an ultra-high-speed performance tire aimed at helping future supercars break the 300-mph threshold.
The French tiremaker is “knocking on the door of 300 mph," Eric Schmedding, Michelin's product manager for original equipment, tells Bloomberg News. He notes that tires are a key enabler to achieving such speeds, which generate extreme heat, pressure and wear.
Michelin tires are used on the two fastest production cars: the Koenigsegg Agera RS (pictured) and Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. The Agera set the top mark of 278 mph last year, breaking the Veyron’s previous record of 268 mph.
Koenigsegg has hinted that the Agera RS replacement, which is expected to bow next year, could hit 300 mph. Several other carmakers, including Croatia’s Rimac Automobili, Dubai-based Devel Motors, Texas-based Hennessey and TransStar Racing also are eyeing 300 mph.
