Mazda Motor Corp. is giving its MX-5 Miata coupe a mid-cycle upgrade that includes a revised engine and other enhancements.

The 2019 model’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is now tuned to make 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, up from today’s 155 hp and 148 lb-ft. Mazda says torque was improved throughout the engine’s power range, and the redline was bumped 10% to 7,500 rpm.

The engine benefits from new pistons, cylinder heads, valve springs and connecting rods. Other goodies include a new muffler and dual mass flywheel that are designed to reduce high-frequency noises and vibrations, respectively.

The interior gets a telescoping steering wheel for the first time. Mazda also lists an improved display screen and more standard driver-assist features.

The changes will debut this summer in Japan, where the MX-5 is known as the Roadster. Similar changes are expected in the U.S. and other markets later this year. Mazda introduced the fourth-generation MX-5 in 2016.
