Mexico's booming auto industry built a record 3.22 million vehicles last year compared with 2.93 million units in 2013, according to the Mexican Automotive Industry Assn.

The trade group predicts Mexico's output, which has doubled in the past nine years, will expand 55% to surpass 5 million units by 2020.

About 82% of last year's production was exported, with the U.S. receiving 1.7 million of the total. Exports to Canada surged more than one-third to 267,000 units.
