Mercedes-Benz is contractually obliged to sponsor two National Football League stadiums between 2017 and 2021, Bloomberg News reports.
Mercedes has signed a 27-year deal to win naming rights to the new stadium set to open in Atlanta in 2017. The facility will become the home field for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer's Atlanta United teams.
Mercedes already holds naming rights for the New Orleans Superdome, home of the NFL's New Orleans Saints. Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes operations in the U.S., tells Bloomberg the earlier deal, which won't expire until after 2021, cannot be renegotiated.
Cannon concedes sponsoring two stadiums is "not something we would do normally." He vows to honor the Superdome contract, telling Bloomberg, "There's room enough for us to play that deal through to its logical conclusion."
