Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit has premiered the GLE Coupe, a sporty four-door crossover with three engine choices ranging from 258 hp to 367 hp.

The five-passenger car will debut in Europe next year as a direct competitor to BMW AG's X6 coupelike crossover. Mercedes says its model was styled to meld the looks of a sport coupe and SUV. The car measures 15 feet long, 6.7 feet wide and 5.7 feet tall.

The GLE Coupe will offer one diesel a 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 258 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque and two gasoline engines: a biturbo 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 333 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, and AMG-prepared variant that makes 367 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque.

Mercedes also plans an eventual fourth option: a twin-turbo, 5.5-liter V-8 mill that will generate more than 518 hp.

All engine options deliver power through a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4matic all-wheel drive system. The gearbox offers five modes that include a do-it-yourself "individual" setting, plus comfort, slippery, sport and sport-plus options. An acoustic system enhances engine sounds within the cockpit, especially when downshifting. Mercedes promises a racy exhaust note and sports car handling characteristics.

Standard wheels are 20 inches in diameter, but buyers may opt for 21- and 22-inch units instead. An optional redesigned air suspension system offers continuously variable damping.

Other notable options include an electric extendable and retractable trailer hitch, cross-traffic and blind-spot warning, active lane keeping, parking assist, automatic steering and braking in stop-and-go traffic, a panoramic glass roof, traffic sign recognition and Bang & Olufsen AMG sound system.
