Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit will join the Formula E electric vehicle race league in the 2019/20 season.
Last October Mercedes tentatively reserved the right to a spot for the 2018/19 season when Formula E is due to expand from 10 to 12 teams. The carmaker says the extra year will give it more time to “properly understand” and prepare for the EV series, which was launched in 2014.
To better focus its motorsports resources, the company plans to quit the German Touring Car championship at the end of next year. Mercedes will maintain its successful Formula One program, which has won three straight championships. The carmaker also has won 183 races, 13 team titles and 10 drivers in its 26-year involvement in the DTM.
Participating in Formula E will help Mercedes develop its electric vehicle technology and promote the company’s new EQ sub-brand for hybrids and EVs. Among its competitors in Formula E will be Audi, BMW, Citroen, Jaguar, Mahindra & Mahindra, NextEV and Renault.
