Daimler AG is recalling 47,800 of its 2016-2017 model GL, GLE and GLS large crossover vehicles in the U.S. to recalibrate the occupant classification system for front passenger airbags.
The OCS is supposed to switch off the airbag as a safety measure if it detects a child seat in the front passenger position. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the affected vehicles may incorrectly identify an older youth or small adult as an infant and turn off the airbag when it shouldn’t.
Daimler will begin notifying owners this month. Dealers will fix the defect by updating the OCS software.
