Daimler AG is preparing an all-electric variant of its flagship S Class large sedan to introduce as soon as 2020.
The car, called EQ S, will ride on a different chassis than the one that carries the piston-powered S Class. The new model compete with Tesla Inc.’s Model S sedan and join nine other EVs Daimler has said it expects to roll out by 2022.
Mercedes’ all-electric EQ sub-brand is also preparing a small sedan, the EQ A, and a crossover vehicle to be called the EQ C.
CEO Dieter Zetsche tells reporters the company is developing an array of plug-in hybrids that promise greater range in all-electric mode. He says standard Mercedes models will switch to a 48-volt architecture and mild-hybrid powertrains such that all Mercedes models will be electrified within about five years.
