Daimler AG is developing a stylish light-duty pickup truck that could be introduced in global markets about five years from now, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Daimler's Mercedes pickup truck concept

The Journal's sources say the vehicle will be co-developed with Nissan Motor Co. The truck will ride on a variant of the platform that carries Nissan's Navara midsize pickup (called the Frontier in the Americas) and be produced in Nissan factories.

The pickup will have a payload of about one metric ton and be offered with 4- and 6-cylinder engines, according to the Journal. Its sources say the vehicle will target buyers in Australia, Europe and Central and South America. There are no plans to offer the truck in the U.S.

Plans call for a four-door cab with seating for four. The truck will be outfitted with a Mercedes powertrain, interior and features. The company tells the Journal there are no plans to develop a fullsize pickup, a size it deems marketable only in the U.S.
