Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit is considering adding an ultra-luxury crossover/SUV, Automotive News reports. Such a model could be marketed under Mercedes' prestigious Maybach sub-brand.

Noting that the crossover/SUV market continues to expand to increasingly high-end niche models, Andreas Zygan, Mercedes director of development for SUVs, says the company is evaluating the segment for new opportunities. He points to the upcoming Bentley Bentayga as an example of the trend.

Mercedes already offers the full-size GL SUV, which tops out at more than $125,000. But there's room to go even higher under the Maybach marquee, notes Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes U.S. operations. He tells AN that a handcrafted crossover/SUV is a "natural fit" for Maybach as the nameplate expands its offerings.
