Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit is rolling out freshened versions of its AMG 4Matic compact performance models: the CLA 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake and GLA 45 AMG.

All three 2016 vehicles will be powered by Mercedes' turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, which also will power the previously announced A 45 AMG. The hand-built engine generates 381 hp and 350 lb-ft. of torque, both up about 6% from the outgoing turbo-four engine.

The new all-wheel-drive AMG models also get an upgraded 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that features shorter ratios in 3rd to 7th gear and quicker shifts across all gears. The enhancements enable faster zero to 62 mph acceleration led by a 9% improvement for the new CLA 45 at 4.2 seconds.

A multi-disc clutch integrated into the rear axle differential can direct as much as 50% of available torque to the rear wheels as needed to bolster traction.

Drivers can switch between four performance modes (comfort, sport, sport+ and individual). An additional "race" mode comes with an optional ride control sports suspension, which also includes two-stage adjustable dampers. Buyers can opt for a new AMG "dynamic plus" package that includes the sports suspension along with a mechanical locking differential and other handling-focused features.

The new AMG models will be launched in Europe after the Frankfurt auto show in September. Sales in the U.S. will follow shortly thereafter.
