Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit used the opening of its new product engineering center in Beijing this week to unveil the Vision G-Code, a highly styled compact sport utility coupe concept.

Daimler says the 2+2 design study signals "evolutionary possibilities" for a future sporty small crossover vehicle. The concept is powered by a variable plug-in hybrid system specifically tailored for use in Asian mega-cities.

The G-Code was co-designed by Daimler design centers in Beijing and Sindelfingen. The car is 4.1 meters (13.5 feet) long, 1.9 meters (6.2 feet) wide and 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) tall.

The exterior design features hidden A-pillars, 21-inch aluminum wheels with narrow carbon-fiber spokes, retractable rearview cameras and counter-opening doors that eliminate the B-pillar. The grille is backed by a digital display that changes colors to indicate the propulsion mode.

The G-Code's powertrain uses a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine to drive the front wheels and an all-electric system to power the rear wheels. Daimler dubs the controller that links the two propulsion sources a "digital prop shaft."

Inside, the instrument panel and airplane style steering wheel extend into position after the driver enters. A wide-screen display activated by the driver's smartphone presents a panorama of vehicle functions. Images from the outside rearview cameras appear at the edges of the display.

Thin-shell seats are equipped with 3-D body scanners to assess the occupant's health and trigger automatic seat heating, cooling and massage features.
