Volkswagen AG says Mark McNabb has left his job as the head of the company’s Electrify America LLC unit.

The long-time industry veteran joined VW Group in 2013 as chief operating officer of the company’s namesake brand in the U.S. McNabb (left) has helmed Electrify America since its formation in February 2017. The company was set up to manage VW’s $2 billion project to build EV charging stations and promote zero-emission vehicles in the U.S. VW agreed to the program as part of a settlement of its diesel emission cheating scandal.

McNabb previously has held top executive positions with General Motors, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan. His 20-year stint at Nissan culminated in being senior vice president of the company’s North America sales and marketing organization.

Giovanni Palazzo (right) will succeed McNabb at Electrify America at an unspecified time later this year. Palazzo joined VW in 2011 and currently heads the company’s e-mobility business strategy. Jan Vycital, the chief financial officer of Electrify America and Volkswagen Group of America, will act as the interim CEO until Palazzo assumes the position.

Electrify America plans to install 2,800 Level 2 charging stations at 500 locations across the U.S. by mid-2019 with another 200 quick-charge stations due to be added later. Last month the company announced plans to install 100 chargers at Walmart locations in 34 states, which would make the retail giant the largest EV charging station host in the country.
