McLaren Automotive Ltd. has produced a one-off supercar, the McLaren X-1, for an unnamed buyer. The company unveiled the radical two-door last weekend at an event in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The bizarrely styled car is loosely based on McLaren's MP4-12C supercar but with a heavily modified body. The X-1 features extremely pronounced side scoops, covered rear wheels, a fluted deck over the rear-mounted engine and a curved rear spoiler.
The car's carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body retains only the 12C's side windows, high-mounted twin exhaust outlets and modified scissor-hinged doors. Most of the car is painted piano black, but the side panels are clear-lacquered woven carbon fiber.
Custom brightwork was machined from aluminum and then nickel-plated. Other custom features include unique wheels, headlamps and tail lamps. McLaren says the car illustrates the company's ability to create one-of-a-kind custom cars through its McLaren Special Operations unit in the U.K.
