McLaren Automotive Ltd. has begun building the first of 375 McLaren P1 supercars at the British company's plant in Woking, England..
McLaren expects to build a maximum of one of the $1.15 million hybrid sports cars per day. Allotments for the Americas, Asia and the Middle East are sold out; some cars are still available for the European market. The car is constructed alongside McLaren's $231,400 MP4-12C and -12C Spider.
The P1 is powered by a 727-hp 3.8-liter twin turbocharged V-8 engine and 176-hp electric motor. The midship-mounted powertrain delivers as much as 25 mpg on the European test cycle. Yet it also can push the 3,100-lb carbon fiber-bodied car from 0 to 62 mph in less than 3.0 seconds and to a top speed of 217 mph.
McLaren P1 rivals include the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari's LaFerrari.
