McLaren Automotive Ltd. says its new 675LT Spider can sprint from zero to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and hit 124 mph in 8.1 seconds. It's top speed is listed at 203 mph, making it the company’s fastest convertible ever.
The new drop-top is powered by the same 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine used in the just-launched 675LT Coupe on which it’s based. The powerplant generates 666 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
The engine used in the two 675LT models is a “heavily revised” version of McLaren’s 650S supercar V-8. It’s fitted with new turbochargers, redesigned cylinder heads, modified exhaust manifolds, a new crankshaft, lightweight connecting rods and a high-flow fuel pump. The changes increase output by 24 hp and 16 lb-ft of torque.
The Spider’s three-piece folding hardtop adds 88 lbs compared with the coupe. The top can be lowered at vehicle speeds as high as 19 mph.
The 675LT coupe’s weight advantage and aerodynamic enhancements make it slightly faster than the new Spider. Both models make extensive use of carbon fiber components and take styling cues from McLaren's 1990s-era F1 GTR race car.
As with the coupe, McLaren plans to limit production of the 675LT Spider to 500 units worldwide. Pricing will start at about $373,000, with deliveries due to begin next summer.
