Mazda to Recall Tribute Crossover for Accelerator Flaw

Mazda Motor Corp. says it will begin recalling 217,500 Tribute crossover vehicles in the U.S. next month to adjust a cruise control cable that could interfere with throttle operation and cause unintended acceleration.

The company's action comes a day after Ford Motor Co. said it would recall 484,600 Escape crossovers from the 2001-2004 model years to correct the same problem. The mechanically identical Escapes and Tributes were built at Ford's Kansas City plant in Claycomo, Mo.

Mazda's campaign involves vehicles from the 2001-2006 and 2008 model years powered by 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engines. (There was no Tribute in the 2007 model year.)

Ford and Mazda says the cruise control cable can be pinched by the engine cover. Their dealers will install a clip to increase clearance between the two components.
