Mazda Motor Corp. will introduce fully electric vehicles in 2019, CEO Masamichi Kogai tells reporters in Japan.
Kogai says the move is being driven by increasingly tough emission limits in the U.S., which all but force carmakers to add more zero-emission models to their lineups, The Nikkei reports. Kogai adds that Mazda plans to add unique features to differentiate its EVs, perhaps including techniques to extend the range of a vehicle whose battery is nearly depleted.
Last year Mazda and Toyota agreed to partner on advanced technologies. The alliance could include collaboration on EVs, according to the companies. But The Nikkei says the companies haven’t decided to pursue any specific projects.
