Mazda Motor Corp. is teaming with Saudi Arabian Oil Co. and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) to develop next-generation fuels and engines aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Saudi Aramco will lead work on the fuel and refinery process. Mazda and AIST will co-develop advanced engine technologies.

The initiative is part of “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” plan Mazda announced last summer. Under the “well-to-wheel” approach, Mazda evaluates a vehicle’s environmental impact throughout the development, production, driving and end-of-life processes.
