Mazda Motor Corp. is again recalling 205,400 vehicles in the U.S., this time to replace passenger-side frontal Takata Corp. airbag inflators with a more advanced design.
The campaign covers 2007-2011 CX-7 and CX-9 crossover vehicles and 2009-2011 Mazda6 sedans.
Mazda recalled the same vehicles a year ago. But it didn’t have updated replacement inflators at the time, so it installed same-type devices as a temporary fix. Those old-design inflators can deteriorate over time and then misfire in a crash.
Now Mazda has a supply of next-generation inflators that use a drying agent that inhibits deterioration. The new recall will install the advanced inflators in vehicles that haven’t yet received last year’s temporary fix. Then Mazda will call back the latter group and update them too.
